JENNIFER Q. LU FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS LAB
ORGANIC MODEL COMPOUNDS AND POLYMER SYNTHESIS
The Functional Nanomaterial Research Laboratory directed by Dr. Jennifer Lu, is looking for a highly motivated and qualified postdoctoral scholar to synthesize model systems and corresponding polymers for creating a new low-energy driven stimuli-responsive material platform [e.g. Nature Chemistry, 2013, 5, 1035] that is highly efficient and reliable.

The candidates should have experience in the following two key technical areas:
1) extensive experience in organic synthesis is a must, and knowledge in polymer synthesis is a plus.
2) Be well versed in spectroscopic characterization techniques. Some knowledge in material property characterization such as mechanical properties and thermal expansion coefficient is valuable to the project.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. It is expected that he/she will stay abreast of recent developments in the field, develop research ideas and write research papers in a timely manner. Mentoring graduate students and undergraduate students who will work on relevant projects is required. It is also his/her responsibility to maintain some of the lab instruments and ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety requirements. Travel to user facilities at the National Laboratories will be required. The appointment will initially be 12 months with a possibility for an extension of up to 12 additional months.

Applicants must have obtained a PhD in chemistry, polymer science or a related field. Highly self-motivated individuals who have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent scientific research successfully are desirable.

Review of applications will begin immediately. Position is open until filled. Starting dates are negotiable. Interested applicants are required to submit 1) a cover letter and a short research statement, 2) curriculum vitae and 3) names of at least three professional/academic references with contact information including mailing address, phone number and e-mail address.
