Jennifer Lu is one of the first three faculty members who established the Materials Science and Engineering program at UC Merced ‐‐ Californiaʹ s newest research university. Prior to joining UC Merced, she acquired ten years industry experience at IBM and Agilent Technologies. She holds 18 patents related to device fabrication, and consistently publishes her work in high impact factor journals. She is a recipient of the DARPA Young Investigator award. She was an invited participant in the Frontiers of Science and Engineering workshop cosponsored by NAE, NAS, and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. She is the PI and also serves as the Center Director for Merced Nanomaterials Center for Energy and Sensing (MACES) sponsored by NASA.

Professor Lu's Functional Materials Laboratory conducts fundamental scientific investigation aiming for creating new transducer materials, capable of efficiently converting one type of energy (or force) into another. Through design, synthesis, fabrication and characterization of molecular- and nano- building blocks that are arranged in a spatially predefined manner, these new platforms could enable technological breakthroughs in fields spanning from life science to green energy to soft robotics.
